At the end of November, 1916, 18th Division were withdrawn from the line and moved way back to the Abbeville area for an extensive period of training. On 5th January, 1917, 8th East Surrey of 55 Brigade were at Forest l’Abbaye undertaking grenade training when Ernest Shelley was accidentally killed. He had already thrown three live grenades without incident but the fourth one exploded when only a few inches away from his hand and badly wounded his neck. He died from these wounds a few minutes later. |
